Jarenlang konden mensen die de Engelse taal machtig waren en zich interesseerden voor feministisch nieuws terecht bij het weblog Broadsheet, onderdeel van internetmagazine Salon.com. Totdat de berichtgeving vanaf 21 december vorig jaar opeens ophield. Wekenlang bleef het stil en pas onlangs informeerde de redactie lezers dat dit onderdeel van Salon definitief ter ziele is.
De reden is eenvoudig, schrijft de redactie:
Simple answer: Resources. Broadsheet had been staffed with only one person for a while. Tracy wanted — and we wanted Tracy — to move on to more reporting and a broader purview. But that simply left no one left to do Broadsheet, and we made the tough call not to move resources from elsewhere on the site, or from new areas we’re building out (more on that in the months to come) to keep it going.
Salon wil zeker aandacht blijven geven aan de onderwerpen die Broadsheet behandelde. Wie zoekt op onderwerpen als Gender of Feminisme vindt daar inderdaad al een heel stel artikelen uit 2011 die passen in de traditie van Broadsheet. Onder andere de Sisterhood, een blog voor Joodse vrouwen, vraagt zich af of het daarom niet juist een goed teken is dat het weblog verdwenen is:
Isn’t the reason we need these feminist sites because women’s issues and news are still marginalized, while things pertaining to men are still classified as general interest? Because big, important things like, say, making and raising human beings, are still considered something only ladies read about? Along with not insignificant matters like gender equity, body image and, often, sex? We don’t get the space to report on and discuss these things in traditional, mainstream sections so we rely on women-only sections to get the job done. Well it seems like that after six years of running Broadsheet, the editors are ready to take these issues out of a feminist context and present them as, gasp, news. [...]…at Salon, feminism won’t be a niche perspective or a specialization, it will be the ubiquitous standard.
